This watercolor settles into Charles Street, Launceston, Tasmania, around 1917, a quiet moment of everyday street life caught mid-motion. A muted sepia palette carries the weight of the architecture, the arched windows, the clock-towered church spire rising above the rooftops, while a run of teal awnings breaks through in a single, consistent note of colour down both sides of the street. A horse-drawn cart pauses at the centre of the road, a tram waits at the curb, and small groups of pedestrians go about their morning, unhurried. The curving tram tracks in the foreground lead the eye gently into the scene, holding history at just the right distance, close enough to feel, far enough to remember.
